Geological Heritage

The geological heritage is a new concept, which requires the full understanding of nature, but also a different perception of the vision of the environment. The geological - geomorphological heritage is a total of geotopes, deposits, forms and procedures, which make up the geological history of each region.

The geological - geomorphological heritage is even described as the geology and geomorphology in their natural place (Prosser 2002a). The concept of conservation of the geological - geomorphological heritage is a cultural concept (IIO, Avgi).

The geotopes form the Geological Geomorphological Heritage and compose the geologic history of each region. The geotopes are the “books of the Earth”. In every area of our planet there are geological places- geotopes that tell the story of Earth in this region. Perhaps here the question arises how many are the locations of geotopes to maintain. The sites that constitute the geological heritage, form the geological history of each region and meet its geodiversity. The answer is as many as we can since each of these places tell a little or greater snapshot of the long history of the world.

The geotopes are a dynamic concept and are as many as we can highlight and interpret with the appropriate information, education, publicity material. The interpretation therefore, is a key concept for the selection, conservation and management of geotopes. Something similar happens with the geoparks, with a few other conditions to be analyzed in turn, in the definition of Geoparks. In other words geotopes and geoparks include in their definition, not only the geological and geomorphological element found in nature, but also their interpretation, promotion and management, concepts which are connected with their protection and conservation
