Ways and means for Geopreservation

There are various ways and means to preserve and protect the geological heritage. Among those are:

  • legislation adoption
  • use of administrative measures
  • economic measures (subsidies, allowances, etc.)
  • spatial planning and land use
  • management recording and management plans of geotopes
  • education and communication

The State is responsible for the first five main topics. The citizen, however, must be vigilant, both to stimulate attention and awareness, and to implement them. Below we will deal with the sixth and important instrument ,this of education and communication. E

ducation - and, in particular, the environmental one- can act as a catalyst for successful geopreservation. Without education there is no support for geopreservation. The Importance of Environmental Education is highlighted in many national conservation policies, while emphasis on these issues has been given from most of international publications and programs relating to the conservation of nature.

The provision of interpretative and educational facilities is a key issue – for every action plan to achieve this goal. Teachers and education professors trained in the subjects, are needed because the involvement and awareness is critical to the successful promotion and conservation of geological heritage.

Teachers need support and examples of good applications for the local Geoenvironment from geopreservants, teaching aids and information on new trends and developments in the geological sciences and the various systems of conservation. Until now there is a lack of supervisory material for the local geological environment.
