Geological Heritage concervation Policy
The geotopes to select, identify, and protect some of them either through legislation and policy design or by raising awareness of citizens, environmental education of students, etc. In these different forms of conservation, there are therefore not only governments, researchers and scientific institutions, but also thelocal authorities of any level, local communities, environmental groups and students – in one world the Citizen. In Europe, the idea of geoconcervation is quite widespread, although we can not say that it has reached the level of biopreservation or other forms of conservation (eg archaeological, cultural, ecological). Already since the beginning of last century, mainly in the Northern countries some efforts have started for geopreservation by a few pioneers that dealt with the issue of earth sciences. Then, these efforts became more systematic. In the last decades of the 20th century statutory bodies have now set up and relative legislations are in force, funding mechanisms and spatial planning, which provide for the conservation, management and protection of geotopes by the State, local authorities and local communities. In some countries, the geopreservation and geological heritage is now incorporated in the conservation policy and environmental protection as an essential environmental component. The nature conservation approach constitutes thus holistic and there are relevant states and organizations policies. Hellenic Preservation Policy. European States Policies.
